Before the summer goes completely away, try to take some “grownup time” for yourself. Ditch the kids — if only for a bit. There are plenty of adult things to do in C-U, and we’re here to hand out a few of our favorites.

Whether you’re looking for a date-night atmosphere or just a fun afternoon with friends, we’ve rounded up a list of the top places for adults to go in Champaign-Urbana and beyond this month. If you don’t find anything you like, check out our list of 75 date night ideas as well.

Chambanamoms thanks Krannert Center for the Performing Arts for presenting this list.

Krannert Center for the Performing Arts is dedicated to the advancement of education, research, and public engagement through the pursuit of excellence and innovation in the performing arts. Embracing the art of the past as well as the art of our time, the Center supports the belief that creativity is a core human characteristic and that the arts hold uniquely transformative potential. Through its multiple and integrated roles as classroom, laboratory, and public square, Krannert Center serves as a touchstone for the exploration and expansion of human experience.

All White Party at Neil St. Blues: Come dressed to impress — all white is highly encouraged — for round four of Neil St. Blues’ annual party led by DJ Silkee on Aug. 26.

Ride the Cyclone: The Musical: The Station Theatre in Urbana hosts a funny, moving look at what makes a life well-lived. The one-hour, 30-minute production is directed by Nathan Bohannon and plays through Aug. 13.

The Avett Brothers at State Farm Center: The three-time Grammy Award nominees perform Aug. 12. Their newest album, The Third Gleam (2020), debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Americana/Folk albums chart, at No. 1 on Rock albums chart and No. 1 on Vinyl albums chart.

Final Summer at the Virginia Theatre: Jeff Schroeder of Smashing Pumpkins provides the music for Final Summer, the unrated 2022 film about the aftermath of a tragedy at summer camp, as a group of camp counselors find themselves fighting for their lives against a masked killer in this locally produced throwback on Aug. 10.

Wednesday trivia at The Rose Bowl Tavern: Every Wednesday is trivia night (7-9 p.m.) at the Urbana staple. The first-place team (six players) receives a $20 gift card.

Crafty Adults at Champaign Public Library: Learn a new craft on Aug. 9 — in this case it’s Cricut, which makes smart cutting machines that work with an easy-to-use app to help you design and personalize almost anything. Beware: Registration fills fast!

’80s hair band night at Pour Bros.: The Friday Night Live concert series continues with a Decade of Decadence ’80s Hair Night on Aug. 11 at Pour Bros. in Champaign. Re-live music from your favorite ’80s hair bands.

Cooking class at Common Ground: Experience a taste of France and its wine country cuisine with this class at Common Ground Food Co-op in Urbana on Aug. 15. Seating is limited to 10 per class.

Wine and yoga at Alto Vineyards: On Aug. 30 bring your mat, blocks, blanket and, well, maybe some bug spray for yoga and wine with Shannan at Alto Vineyards. All levels welcome. Your $20 includes a yoga class and a glass of wine.

Head to the State Fair: So don’t tell your kids you’re going to the fair without them, but make plans to spend at least one night there without your children. Head to the midway, demolition derby, or the beer tent. Check out our State Fair info here.
